Tail – Moose mane
Foam – Top foam 2 mm
           – Bottom Foam 1 mm
Legs – Silly Legs
Body – Peacock hurl, red holo tinsel
Hackle – Grizzly
Sighter – White Floss
A Beetle or Gurgler foam cutter

We’ll be tying our version of the murdich minnow our favorite smallie fly that also works well for largemouth and northern. 

2022 Winter Fly Tying Contest

Categories & Dates:
Warm Water: Top Water – Due by December 31st, 2021
Dry Fly: Due by January 31st, 2022
Trout Streamer: Due by February 28th, 2022
Warm Water Streamer: Due by March 31st, 2022


  • All submissions must be in by the due date to be judged.
  • Only one fly may be submitted by each tier in each category.
  • Patterns can be original or non-original patterns.
  • There will be one winner from each category and a grand prize winner chosen from the four category winners.
  • Entries will not be returned.


  • Each category winner: $25.00 Gift Certificate to Front 20 Outfitters Fly Shop
  • Grand Prize: $50.00 Gift Certificate to Front 20 Outfitters Fly Shop

The Beginners Fly Tying class is designed for the beginner fly-tier looking to tie their own flies or someone looking to refresh their fly tying skills. In this class, we will tie nymphs, dry flies, and streamers. In addition, we will introduce students to fly tying tools, and materials. No experience is necessary to join us for our beginner class and our goal is for you to leave the class with the knowledge and experience required to tie basic fly patterns.
The class will be six nights, at our fly shop in Perham on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 pm till 7:00 pm or so. Each class will last approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours.

  • All materials, vises, and tools will be provided for students to use. If you have your own vise and tools, please bring them to the class.
  • You will learn the basic fly tying techniques necessary to tie nymphs, dry flies, and streamers.
  • We will explain, the basic tools used in the tying process.
  • We will explore a variety of the materials, so that you become familiar with how they are used.
