Fly Fishing Classes

Intro to Tenkara Fly Fishing Classes

Fee: $20

Instructor: Doug Harthan, Front 20 Outfitters

Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing that uses only a rod, line, and fly. Simplicity, precise casting, delicate presentation, and fly control – these are a few of the things that distinguish Tenkara. In Tenkara one just uses a rod, line and fly. A fixed length of line connects to the tip of the telescopic rod, a short length of tippet is attached to the line and then a fly and you’re ready to fish. Developed in the mountain streams of Japan, tenkara was the original domain of commercial anglers who used to catch native trout for a living. Its history is suspected to go back at least 400 years, though little of it is documented. This class will cover rods, lines, flies, knots, open and close a rod, casting, and techniques to land a fish. If you have questions or need equipment to be provided, please call Doug at 218.640.3163. Must register with Community education program where the class is being held.
